On ‘90 mins with Mathematical’ - Chief ‘Lekan Salami and Shooting Stars FC - a mystical relationship?
Chief Olalekan Sanusi Salami was one of the most renowned figures in African football from the 1960s to his death in 1988. He was one of the architects of the establishment of Shooting Stars International FC of Ibadan, and of professional football in Nigeria, amongst several other contributions to the game of football.
He mentored some of the greatest footballers of an era including ‘Yours Truly’.
In 1976, he led Shooting Stars FC to win Nigeria’s first international Club trophy - the Africa Cup Winners Cup.
In 1992, his first son, Yomi Salami, succeeded him on the board of Shooting Stars FC. The team won its second continental trophy, the Confederations Cup!
1n 1998, a second son, Owolabi Salami, was on the board of the club. The team won the sub-regional trophy, WAFU Cup.
This is 2026.
Shooting Stars International FC have qualified for another continental club trophy in the 2027 season. Taiwo Salami, a third son, is the current Chairman of the club.
Will history repeat itself again? Will Shooting Stars FC win a fourth African club trophy with a Salami in charge? What is it about the Salamis, the club and continental club glory?
‘On 90 minutes with Mathematical’ this weekend, I shall be joined by Yomi Salami for a Breakfast Conversation on the return of Shooting Stars International FC to continental competition; the Salami’s and the club since the exit of their father; the return of government clubs to the top pyramid of Nigerian football; and many other related questions.
Join me tomorrow morning, June 7, 2026, from 7:30am on Eagle7 Sports Radio 103.7 on terrestrial radio. Or click on eagle7fm.com/ from any part of the world and be connected.
